Why is your water use so high?

Why is your water use so high?

Reasons why your water use may increase and decrease throughout the year.

Leaks, the number of people living in your home, the condition of your appliances, the season and the use of automatic watering systems can all affect how much water is used throughout your home.

Any leaks?

The most common cause for a spike in your water bill is a leak. You’d be surprised how much water can be wasted from a slow leak.

Check around your home for:

  • dripping taps
  • slow trickles from the toilet cistern
  • damp spots in the garden that could indicate a damaged water pipe
  • leaks from appliances such as the hot water system or evaporative cooler.

Using an automatic watering system?

Automatic systems can be the forgotten source of water in many homes. They are the most common reason for unexpected water use, especially if they are programmed to turn on overnight.

Any visitors?

Two extra people in your household can increase your water consumption by around 300 litres per day. Multiply that by a week or two and you will see a jump on your consumption graph.

Change of season?

Water use tends to increase over the warmer months, so remember to compare with the same time last year, rather than with your previous bill.
