Check for water leaks

Check for water leaks

Use your water meter to check for leaks on your property.

To check for a water leak

  • Turn off all taps in your house.
  • Write down all the numbers on the dial of your water meter.
  • Don't use water for at least a few hours. We recommend overnight.
  • Before you use your water check the dial on the water meter again. If any numbers have changed you may have a leaking pipe, tap, toilet cistern, solar hot water service or other appliance or fitting.

If you have a leak, you should call a licensed plumber to identify and fix the problem. If you are a tenant you should notify your managing agent or property owner immediately so they can organise a plumber to investigate.

Toilet leak test

Follow these simple steps to check if your toilet has a leak:

  • Remove the lid of your toilet cistern.
  • Place a few drops of food dye into the cistern.
  • Do not flush your toilet for 10-15 minutes.
  • If the dye has seeped down into the bowl when you return, then you have a leak.

Toilet leaks are often a result of the rubber valve in the cistern deteriorating. You can contact a licensed plumber to fix this for you.
