Statement on housing development in north-east Victoria
30 October 2024
North East Water is committed to supporting housing across the region and meeting the draft Victorian housing targets of 31,200 new homes by 2051. This year alone we are investing more than $90 million in new or upgraded infrastructure that supports growth and water security.
In Wodonga, we are allocating $36 million towards essential upgrades to pipes and pumps, which will not only service growth but also contribute to better environmental outcomes.
Currently, there are at least 150 lots in Wodonga that have already been approved for servicing that are under development, with an additional 1,000 lots approved for servicing by North East Water where construction has yet to commence.
Regarding development in Tangambalanga, we have been open and transparent with the developer about deferring investment until our next price submission, which commences from July 2026, and which will be subject to customer engagement.
This decision allows us to focus our resources on critical infrastructure projects in Wodonga and the wider region. To put this in context, the next stage of the Kiewa Tangambalanga development requires $15 million for 155 house lots, whereas the $18 million investment we are making in Wangaratta will service approximately 2,900 lots.
Our customers expect us to be prudent and efficient with their money, which is why we meticulously plan, sequence, and prioritise our infrastructure investments.
In addition to these efforts, we have developed detailed masterplans for 15 townships, including Wodonga, to ensure effective planning and servicing for future growth. We are proactively working with developers and councils to align with these sequencing plans, including collaborating on interim solutions when necessary.
As part of our commitment to transparency, we are currently engaging with our customers and stakeholders on our 2026 price plan, discussing how we will continue to service growth in the future.
