Alpine Shire developments

28 August 2024

North East Water' priority is to provide reliable water and sewer services to our existing customers, to protect the environment and to plan for the future.

Our existing water and sewer infrastructure in Mount Beauty, Tawonga and Tawonga South has reached capacity.

This follows North East Water recently indicating support to Alpine Shire of a proposed 82-lot staged development in Tawonga South which will connect to the local sewer system and include the installation of a detention tank to manage capacity. Stage 1 for 30 connections could commence immediately with the remaining stages able to connect once the water network is completed. This development represents at least 5 years of growth for Mount Beauty, Tawonga South and Tawonga at the current growth rate.

In the last three years property development has been minimal in this area, with approx. four new properties connecting to our water and sewer services annually.

To manage our system capacity, we are not approving additional connections until essential infrastructure is upgraded, or short-term operational improvements can be made that may allow smaller developments to be approved in the near future.

We are in the process of planning significant infrastructure upgrades to support new water and sewer connections including:

  • a new drinking water storage tank which is expected to be operational in 2027-28
  • a new sewer pump station in Tawonga South anticipated to be completed in 2028/29

After extensive community engagement, construction of a new $4 million raw water offtake is set to begin later this year.

These projects represent a $9 million investment in the local community, supporting growth and development in Mount Beauty, Tawonga, and Tawonga South.

North East Water is proactively planning for the future to ensure water security and to respond to climate change, growth, ageing infrastructure and increasing regulatory requirements.

Over our current eight-year price period, we will invest more than $350 million in new and upgraded infrastructure across our service region.

We continually review our priorities to ensure that our investments meet critical water and wastewater security needs, including health and environmental compliance obligations.

If people are considering a development or small sub-division in Mount Beauty, Tawonga, or Tawonga South, please contact our Property Development team for a pre-development discussion to ensure plans align with our infrastructure capabilities.
