Sewer main repaired after spill in Wangaratta

18 December 2018

North East Water is continuing to clean-up a sewage spill in Wangaratta after a sewer main burst on Saturday.

Operations crews spent several hours fixing the broken pipe on Ashmore Street and are still in the process of decontaminating the site.

Around 650,000 litres of wastewater is believed to have spilled onto nearby farm land and was contained by the town’s storm water levee system.

Executive Operations, John Day, said we are confident that the spill was contained and has not entered the nearby Ovens River or other waterways.

“We are working as quickly as possible to clean-up the site and we appreciate the understanding of nearby residents”, Mr Day said.

“At this stage it is unclear why the sewer main burst, however last week’s heavy rain storms may have put excess pressure on the pipe.

“All regulatory stakeholders have been notified of the spill and its representatives are being kept up to date with the clean-up.”
