Galvanised iron pipe

Galvanised iron pipe

Galvanised pipe is not an approved material for water pipes on domestic services under the Australian Standard (AS3500). Galvanised pipe hasn't been used for the purpose of water pipes since the 1960's. Most pipesĀ that are still in useĀ are getting old and becoming corroded.

Galvanised iron pipe suffers from the following issues:

  • corodes internally causing rust build-up on the inside of the pipe, reducing the internal diameter which restricts water flow and eventually makes the pipe unusable, and
  • corrosion can eat through the wall of the pipeand reduce its thickness resulting in numerous small "pin-hole" leaks that are impossible to repair.
