Heavy rain causes sewer spills in Wangaratta

 02 December 2017

North East Water is responding to a sewage spill in Wangaratta following extremely heavy rain in the region on 1 and 2 December 2017.

Wastewater is entering One Mile Creek in the Vincent Road area after stormwater infiltrated the sewer system.

Executive Manager Operations, John Day, said the system is designed to overflow in major storm events, otherwise sewage could back-up into connected properties.

“The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has been notified of the spills and its representatives will inspect the sites”, Mr Day said.

"As soon as the sites have been cleaned-up and disinfected, water samples will be collected from the creek for analysis.

“As a precaution we are advising people to avoid contact with creek water for several days.”
